Three things to do before we get there
Most of the damage happens in the minutes before anyone touches a tool. If you can do these safely, do them, then call.

Shut the water off
Under the fixture if the leak is at a sink or toilet. Otherwise the main valve, usually near the meter on the street side of the basement.

Kill the power to the heater
If the water heater is draining or the tank has split, switch off its breaker, or turn the gas control to off. An element that fires dry is a second repair.

If you smell gas, get out
Do not touch switches and do not go looking for it. Leave the building, then call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Call us after they clear it.
Then call us. A person picks up. Nights, weekends and holidays reach the same number. Tell us what you shut off and we will tell you what to expect before we roll.

The cold finds every weak joint
Lake effect snow, a week below freezing, then a thaw. That cycle is what puts most of our winter calls on the board, and almost all of them arrive at an inconvenient hour.

A water heater or a repipe is rarely a planned purchase. We work with a third party lender so the cost can be spread over monthly payments instead of landing in one go.
The lender sets the terms, not us. You see the rate, the term and the total in writing from them before anything is signed, and you are free to walk away at that point. We do not take a payment to start work.

Called at half past ten at night with water coming through the kitchen ceiling. Somebody picked up, told me which valve to shut, and was at the house inside the hour.
They looked at the water heater and told me it had a few years left. I had already decided to replace it. That is the reason they got the repipe six months later.
Common questions
Before you call
What does it cost to have you come out?
A service call is $89 in normal business hours, and that covers the trip and the diagnosis. It comes off the bill if you have us do the work. You get the repair price before anybody starts, so the $89 is the most you can spend by having us look.
What do you charge after hours?
The after hours call is $149 on nights, weekends and holidays, and the labour rate is higher than a weekday rate. We tell you both numbers on the phone before we come out, so nothing on the invoice is a surprise at two in the morning.
Do you charge for a quote on a replacement?
No. Planned work like a water heater, a softener, a sump pump or a repipe is quoted free, and that includes coming to look at the space. The service call applies to diagnosing a fault, which is a different job.
How fast can you actually get here?
It depends on where you are and what is already on the board. What we will do is give you a real window on the phone rather than a hopeful one, and call you if it moves. If we cannot get to you quickly enough, we will say so while you still have time to call somebody else.
Do you pull permits?
Yes, where the town requires one, and the cost is itemised on your quote rather than buried in it. Water heaters, gas line work and repipes usually need one. It also means the work is inspected by someone who does not work for us.
Are you licensed and insured?
Example Plumbing Co. is licensed, bonded and insured, and carries general liability coverage. We can email the certificate before the first visit if you would like it on file.
My drain keeps backing up. Is cabling it a waste of money?
Sometimes. If a main line clogs more than about once a year, the cable is treating a symptom. In a lot of older homes around here the cause is tree roots in a clay sewer lateral, and a camera down the line will show it in a couple of minutes. We would rather you see the footage and decide than pay us to cable it every spring.
Do you work on the heating side as well as the plumbing?
Yes. Furnaces, boilers, AC and thermostats. It is one call for the house, which matters most on a winter night when the question is whether the problem is a heater, a pipe, or both.
