Our story
A kitchen and a bakery, sharing one oven
Example Kitchen & Bakery started as a bread table at the farmers market on Saturday mornings, and it outgrew the table.
We took the old hardware storefront on Millrace Street because it had a floor drain, a back door wide enough for flour pallets, and a front window that gets sun until about two in the afternoon. The deck oven bakes bread from five until seven, then the same oven roasts the tomatoes for the soup and holds the biscuits for the breakfast sandwiches.
That is the whole operation. There is no commissary and nothing arrives frozen on a truck. If it is on the menu, somebody here made it this morning, and if we run low on something we would rather tell you than make it twice as fast and half as well.
We close on Mondays. The starter gets fed anyway.
The flourMilled in the Midwest and delivered in fifty pound bags, not bought by the sack.
The scheduleDough at five, doors at seven, second bake around half ten, kitchen closed at half two.
The roomTwenty eight seats, two of them at the window ledge, and a lot behind the building.
