Hair studio · Northwest Indiana

Hair that grows out well.

A small studio in downtown Valparaiso for cutting, colour and a finish you can do again at home on a Tuesday. Every appointment opens with a consultation, and colour is quoted before anything is mixed.

Tuesday to Saturday · New clients welcome

Services and prices

What we do, and what it costs

Prices are ranges because hair is not a standard size. Length, density and what is already on your hair all change the time and the product, so the number you are told at the consultation is the number you pay.

The stylists

Three chairs, three sets of hands

Pick a person rather than a price tier. Everyone here charges from the same list, so the only question is whose work suits what you want done.

Renata

Owner · Cutting

Twenty two years behind the chair, the last nine of them in this room. Cuts dry as often as wet, because that is how you will wear it.

  • Precision bobs and one length shapes
  • Curly and wavy hair, cut curl by curl
  • Fine hair that needs weight left in it
  • Short shapes that still grow out cleanly

Ask for Renata if you have been told your hair "will not hold a shape".

Bridget

Colourist

Trained on foil work and stayed for the painting. Keeps a written formula for every client so the colour is repeatable, even if she is out that week.

  • Balayage and lived in blonde
  • Root melts and soft grow out lines
  • Grey blending rather than full coverage
  • Correction work on box colour and banding

Ask for Bridget if you want to come in less often, not more.

Marisol

Styling and treatments

Does the finishing on most of the colour that leaves this room, and teaches you the brush work at the mirror so the second day looks like the first.

  • Blow dries and iron work
  • Smoothing and bond treatments
  • Occasion styling, with trials
  • Long hair that needs weight taken out

Ask for Marisol if your hair never looks the same at home.

We do not photograph our stylists for this page. Everyone here is described by the work they do, which is the part you are actually choosing between.

New clients

What the first visit looks like

Nobody sits down cold. The first appointment runs a little longer, and part of it is spent talking.

A consultation before anything else

Fifteen minutes, at the mirror, with your hair dry and worn the way you normally wear it. Bring photographs, including any you dislike, because those are often more useful.

A patch test 48 hours before colour

If this is your first colour with us, we need a small test behind the ear two days ahead. It takes two minutes and you can do it on the way past. No test, no colour, with no exceptions.

A number, before anything is mixed

We tell you the price and the length of the appointment, and write the formula down. If what you want cannot be done safely in one visit, we say so then and map out how many it would take.

A check, a week later

Anything that is not sitting right within seven days, come back and we will put it right at no charge. That applies to the cut and to the tone.

Cancellations

Please give us 24 hours if you need to move an appointment. Colour appointments over two hours hold a card on file, and a first missed appointment is never charged. After that we ask for half of the service price before rebooking.

Clients

In their words

Example wording  These quotes were written for this demonstration. A real site carries the owner's own clients, in their own words, with no scores attached.

She spent the first ten minutes telling me why the photo I brought would not work on my hair, then gave me something better.

Alina, Chesterton

Four months since the balayage and the grow out still looks deliberate. I have never got that out of a colour before.

Teresa, Valparaiso

They quoted me at the consultation, and that was the number on the card reader at the end. No surprises.

Dev, Portage

Appointments

Request an appointment

Tell us what you are after and when you can get here. We reply with the times we have, the stylist we would put you with, and a price where we can give one without seeing your hair.

Nothing is confirmed until we write back. If you would rather talk it through, call (219) 555-0194 during opening hours.

Ten digits. We text unless you tell us otherwise.

Same price list whoever you see.

Questions

Before you book

How much will my colour actually cost?

We cannot tell you properly over the phone, because the answer depends on your length, your density and what is already sitting on your hair. What we can promise is that you get the number at the consultation, before anything is mixed, and that the number does not move afterwards unless you ask for something different in the chair.

Do I really need a patch test?

Yes, for your first colour with us, and again if it has been more than six months since your last one here. It goes behind the ear, takes two minutes, and has to happen at least 48 hours ahead. A reaction to colour is rare and genuinely serious, so this is the one thing we will not bend on.

How far ahead do I need to book?

Cuts are usually easier to place than colour, and Saturdays go first. Colour appointments are longer, so they need more planning. If you are flexible on the day, tell us in the form and we will offer you whatever has opened up, including cancellations.

What if I do not like it?

Tell us within seven days and come back in. We will adjust the cut or the tone at no charge. It is a normal part of the work, particularly with a new client, and we would much rather do that than have you live with it or fix it at home.

Can I bring a photo?

Please do, and bring more than one. It is also worth bringing a photo of something you do not want, because "not this" is often clearer than "something like this". We will be straight with you about which parts of a photo will translate to your hair and which will not.

Do you take walk ins?

If there is a gap, yes, and a fringe trim we can almost always fit in. Anything longer than a dry trim is better booked, because we hold the chair for the whole appointment rather than overlapping clients.

What products do you use?

Professional colour and care lines, chosen per service rather than one brand for everything. We write down exactly what went on your hair and keep it on file, so the result can be repeated whether or not you see the same stylist next time. Ask at the chair and we will show you the bottle.

Are children welcome?

Yes, for haircuts and as company. First haircuts are a nice thing to do here and you are welcome to sit in the chair and hold them. For long colour appointments it is easier on everyone if you can come without them.
